The circle of teaching and learning
An article by Meg Hutton
Teaching and learning tai chi is never ending. That's one of the benefits that makes it such a wonderful way to exercise throughout out our lives. There is no age limit, with practice we can just get better at it. It can be a journey of a life time.
Practicing Tai Chi Out of Doors
In Harmony With Nature
Chinese people can be seen practising tai chi outside, early in the morning. This ritual of daily practice, enjoying nature and fresh air, enhances the enjoyment of doing tai chi. It is a very refreshing and energising way to start each day. The peacefulness and sights and sounds, particularly in a park or garden, help us to relax into the moves. The ancient proverb below explains some of that.
Chinese Proverb
Close your eyes and you will see clearly.
Cease to listen and you will hear truth.
Be silent and your heart will sing.
Seek no contact and you will find union.
Be still and you will float on the tide of the spirit.
Be gentle and you will need no strength.
Be patient and you achieve all things.
Be humble and you will remain entire.
Tai Chi for Fall Prevention
Studies show that tai chi improves balance
Balance deteriorates with age, often undetected. In class, new students often are surprised that their balance is not as good as they expected. In as little as 1 9 week course they see an improvement. In older people the improvement is slower, but quite profound after several courses as the legs become stronger. Balance work is an important component of all classes with Tai Chi for Every Body; for students of all ages (5 and over.)
